Cool October weather after yesterday’s storms made for a pleasant hike. This trail is mostly smooth dirt surface, but has occasional exposed roots to avoid and wasn’t too muddy despite recent rains. It has two outlets that lead to the beach and I explored a way to connect those two in a loop for another hike since the lake level is fairly low. The Army Corps site currently lists the water level 2.08 ft below normal at 582.92 feet.
The beach is especially beautiful on sunny days like today, though the water was pretty turbid. It’s lined with lots of chunky sandstone boulders at the forest’s edge and drifts of pebbles. It’s mostly stretches of fine sand, but there are a few muddy spots to avoid.
There’s not much fall color showing up just yet, except for the occasional fallen sassafrass leaf. The forest is composed mostly of Chinkapin and other oak species, sassafrass, juniper and elm. Near the water there are willows, button bush, bunch grasses and sycamore. Small ferns and mosses line the walls of the long straight gulley that leads to the lake shore.
This is also a great biking trail. The path directly down to the lake is rocky and not accessible to bikes though, so to get one to the shoreline, you’ll need to turn off at the campground marker.

Good hike but you can hear the off-road park and two separate highways, making for a less than peaceful hike

Clean and quiet area to run or walk with good sidewalks along Darlington. The only problem can be poor street lighting at night, but it’s a generally safe area.

Fun little lap around Lake Jackson. Southwest of Mounds, OK. Wind was decent to strong due to slight cold front. Easily cross the lake with the wind alone. We did take our poles to wet a line. No bites, just a beautiful day.

Moderate trail in terms of difficulty. The pink trail had less foot traffic which was nice.
