Overview

South Mountain Reservation is a 2,110 acre nature reserve in New Jersey. Deep in the woods a 25-foot waterfall at Hemlock Falls is one of the features that you will see along the 50 miles of trails. Children will enjoy the Turtle Back Zoo located within the park's boundaries. Also within the boundaries of the park is the Orange Reservoir and a boathouse-restaurant.

Getting Started

Parking: N40.72832° W74.30421° (Locust Grove Parking Area) is one of several locations. Porta-johns can be found at the Oakdale and Turtle Back Picnic Area parking lots. Crossing the Rahway River requires a rock-hop which can be difficult if the water level is high. There is a high water route on the River Trail woods road.

When to Go

Closed during the Essex County Deer Management Program in January and February.
