Overview

Garret Mountain Reservation is a county park with over 500 acres of woodland nestled in Woodland Park, NJ. There are views of Paterson and NYC. The park is a migrating bird sanctuary for over 150 species. It contains Barbour’s pond which is stocked with fish. It has about 6 miles of walking/running trails, There’s an Equestrian Center, Boathouse, Lambert’s Castle and Lookout Tower.

Getting Started

There are 9 parking lots in the park but it does get very crowded on a summer weekend. For hiking, the best place to start is at the Auto Overlook since several trails start from there. Lambert’s Castle, an historic landmark is accessible from the park but you need to check with the Park Service to determine if the trail is open. There are seasonal bathrooms throughout the park.

Permits

There are no fees for entering the park or for parking unless you are unlucky enough to visit during the Passaic County Fair then be prepared to pay.

Dog Info

Dogs are permitted but they must be leashed. That being said, be prepared to encounter horses and dogs off-leash as you walk/hike the trails.
