Overview

Montara Mountain is a protected area in California. This area is adjacent to a marine reserve and a dog-friendly beach. Parking is free but facilities are limited (no bathrooms, no water). This area serves as a wildlife corridor from Daly City/ north Pacifica through Half Moon Bay and beyond Highway 92. It's a solid pick for trail running, beginner-intermediate level mountain biking, and hiking.

Getting Started

Park along Highway 1 or at Gilbert Elementary School in Montara.

When to Go

Check the weather! Any given day can be cold, dark and windy, or calm, warm and sunny. To avoid horrific crowds (read: Highway 1 traffic) go anytime between November and June, or most weekdays.

Dog Info

Dogs are allowed and need to be on-leash. Most trails are dog friendly but consult any of the trail maps throughout the reserve. The area is loaded with ticks from March through October and somewhat exposed at higher elevations making it less suitable during warmer days. The area is also adjacent to a dog-friendly beach.
