Overview

The Yorkshire Dales includes some of the finest limestone scenery in the UK, from crags and pavements to an underground labyrinth of caves. Each valley or ‘dale’ has its own distinct character, set against expansive heather moorland tops. Stone-built villages sit amongst traditional farming landscapes of field barns, drystone walls and flower-rich hay meadows, and show how the area has been shaped over thousands of years by the people who have lived and worked here. Spectacular waterfalls and ancient broadleaved woodland contrast with the scattered remains of former mine workings and other rural industries which remind us of the area’s rich industrial heritage. Together, nature and people have created a special landscape of immense beauty and character.

Getting Started

The Yorkshire Dales National Park is massive and covers an assortment of sights and activities. It's best to plan your time by visiting their website at https://www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/plan-your-visit/.

When to Go

All times of year are fine to visit and bring their own experiences. Spring through Autumn will be the warmest and most crowded time.

Dog Info

Dogs are welcome.

Many ground nesting birds are easily disturbed by inquisitive dogs and fly away leaving the nest vulnerable. From March to July use a short lead.

Stiles provide a barrier to animals. Dogs might have to learn how to use them or be lifted over – they can fall and hurt themselves.

Poo – bag it and bin it! Toxocariasis can be passed via waste to other dogs and people, and even into the soil.

Not everyone likes dogs. Please be considerate and keep your dog on a lead when passing others.

Dogs must be kept under control at heel or better still on a lead around livestock – after all, your dog could be shot for disturbing or chasing farm animals.

If you are chased by livestock when walking your dog, it is safer to drop a dog’s lead and get out of the field.

The spectacular limestone scenery includes hazards a dog could fall into such as caves, limestone pavement and sink holes. Please stick to the paths.

SDB 251101 Lancashire and Yorkshire Dales
Mud, ruts and a bit scratchy at first, then grassy fields, more mud, rock climbs, water crossings (not done on this occasion) and fantastic views from the top of the Dales. Reasonable ground clearance needed.

The Yorkshire dales at its best. From the Aysgarth falls to Bolton castle and back through Carperby to the falls.

    Yorkshire 3 peaks clockwise
Clockwise 3 peaks, excellent day out. Clockwise from Horton means you can do 2 peaks early, followed by a long walk to third peak and then a short walk back to the car. Bring more water and juice and food than you think, pack for 4 seasons and dig deep!
