Bristol, Kingsport, and Johnson City TN, referred to collectively as the Tri-Cities area and also the "Appalachian Highlands" region, offer access to many great hikes, including some of the best parts of the Appalachian trail. Three of the best AT section hikes include: Carver's Gap to Grassy Ridge Bald on Roan Mountain, Laurel Falls from the Hampton trailhead, and Nolichucky Ridge starting from the Nolichucky AT Hostel. Other great nearby hiking areas include Rock Creek Falls and Rocky Fork State Park (near Erwin) and Roan Mountain, in Kingsport.
