This is the third time I've hiked Graybeard and I've enjoyed it just as much each time. I especially like the many views of waterfalls and cascades and hiking along the fast flowing stream. Walking the switchbacks left from the location of the train tracks (now gone) is a nice rest before continuing the climb. Most of the trail is rocky, especially near the summit. The short walk out to Walker Knob is worth it as the view is better than from Graybeard itself, and the shelter makes a nice lunch spot. An option is to follow the trail through Pot Cove Gap to Rocky Head trail on the way down but you will need to car shuttle or walk the road back to the trailhead where you started.
