Overview

This is a easy loop trail to Vulcan in Petroglyph National Monument.

This trail goes by J A and Black.

Getting Started

There's a nice parking lot with toilet facilities. You can't miss the trailhead.

The parking lot is only open during daylight hours, so if you're going for sunrise or sunset (which I recommend!) you'll need to park outside of the gate. I've talked with rangers about this and they've said that it's fine to do so. There's parking for about four vehicles outside of the gate. This adds about 1/2 mile to your hike so allow yourself a little extra time.

Taking Children

This is a great hike for kids. Wide open space makes it easy for kids to run ahead. Going up and down the volcanic hills gives them a lot to explore. Teach them to stay on the trails and then let them run wild.

Always nice during every season of the year. My kids always have a good time. The black rocks give it an otherworldly feel.
