Scott Kilvert loop via not quite Cradle Mountain summit
Amazing!!! Absolutely spectacular. Would do again in a heart beat. Fagus was turning and was exceptionally beautiful.
Felt extremely safe and there were tons of people. Very very busy on a Sunday and Monday. Loads of international tourists. Trails were all well marked.
I did not make it to the top of cradle mountain, I bailed because it felt unsafe. I was alone, it was very wet, and I had my big overnight bag. I think if I had have been with someone, it was dry and I had a smaller bag I would have been okay.
However there was one bit on the way down that was a genuine down climb and I had to lower my bag, but someone helped me get down. When they told me where to put my feet it was fine but it was hard being confident and trusting but in the dry and having done it I might be okay. Otherwise it’s mostly just very large boulders where you don’t want to fall off into a hole. Could also be worth brining a pack line if I had a large bag (but would be better to have a small bag), as one spot where I lowered my pack it did roll which wasn’t great.
All other scrambling on the route was chill.
There was tons of places to collect water.
There were places with reception and without. You really only need 1 litre.
