Discover this 9.8-km out-and-back trail near Banyuwangi, East Java. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 3 h 50 min to complete. Mount Ijen is like no other volcano in the world. It is home to the world’s largest acidic crater lake and the site of a dangerous sulfur mining operation. This volcano radiates the natural phenomenon known as the electric blue flames, which can only be seen in two places in the entire world: Java in Indonesia and Iceland.
The path to Mount Ijen is quite difficult, rocky, and steep. To hike this mountain, you need a local guide to take you to the area of blue flames and the sunrise viewpoint. It is also recommended that you bring a special mask because of the sulfur smell.
