Day 01: Quartelhuain to Laguna Mitucocha

Climb gradually from Quartelhuain (4,170m) to the first pass, Cacanan Punta (4,690m), on a well-trodden trail through wide grassy valleys. After the pass, it’s recommended to follow the ruta alpina (high alpine alternative) ~10min down for better views—watch GPS closely to find the correct fork. Traverse across open hillsides before a steep final descent to Laguna Mitucocha (4,270m). Informal lakeside campsites offer incredible views of Nevado Jirishanca. ⏱️ 5hrs 🥾 9.1km, +685m 🗺️ max 4,690m
