Golden Canyon Trailhead via Gower Gulch path(edit)

Overview

The Golden Canyon - Badlands - Gower Gulch Loop highlights some of Death Valley’s most striking geology: layered mudstone hills, narrow canyon corridors, and the vivid contrast between golden slopes and the deep-red walls at Red Cathedral Junction. Early morning or late afternoon light brings out the richest colors and is also the safest time to hike, given the desert heat.

The route begins at the Golden Canyon trailhead along Badwater Road and climbs gradually up a winding canyon lined with golden and ochre-colored walls. After one mile, the trail splits. Turn right to continue the loop or continue straight toward Red Cathedral. Minor rock scrambling over short ledges and through narrow passages lead to an optional steep path to a viewpoint along Red Cathedral.

Back on the loop, ascended steeply on an open ridge with sweeping views of the surrounding desert hills. At a junction with the Badlands Loop trail, turn left toward Zabreiski Point. Turning right will shorten the loop by about a mile. At Zabriskie Point Junction keep right to continue the Badlands loop (or left to Zabriskie Point) and then rejoin the Gower Gulch Trail. Descend through dry Gower Gulch. The trail leaves Gower Gulch to parallel Badwater Road back to the trailhead.

Getting Started

Golden Canyon Trailhead is 2 miles south of Highway 190 along Badwater Road. There is a vault toilet. This is a popular trail, and the parking lot may fill.

Taking Children

Good hike for pre-teens and older, mostly limited by the distance and sun/heat exposure. The hike up to the junction is appropriate for younger children.
