Overview

The trail up Lion's Gulch is easy although once the cattle are moved in around June 15 it gets a little messy. Once at the top the trail down to West Elk Creek is moderate to the first two switchbacks. After that the trail becomes difficult--down trees, trail overgrown with gambel oak and wild roses in places. In places the trail barely exists. Doubt it has been maintained in the last 40 years. Except for experienced hikers, would not recommend going beyond the 2nd switchback.

Elk Park, about half way to the top has a variety of wildlife, including Mormon crickets, but when the cattle are present the wildlife becomes scarce. The first half of Lion Gulch is a good birding area.
