Overview

The trail heads uphill through the trees. Reach a junction where the loop starts and turn right. The trail passes through meadows and forest where you will see wildflowers blooming in May. Reach an open rocky area that burned in 2002, opening up the views. Mt. Shasta, Pilot Rock, and Mt. Ashland can be seen on clear days. There are numerous spots to stop and take a break and enjoy the view. As the trail continues it heads back into the trees and reaches the junction where you started the loop. Stay left to head back to the car.

Getting Started

Arrive early on the weekend. This is a popular hike but there's only room for about a dozen cars at the trailhead.

Started earlier in the morning, the trees were beautifully frosted and there were some light patches of snow around. Sections of the trail were very muddy. It was a beautiful and easy hike, highly recommend.

Beautiful hike! Butterflies and bees in the valley openings, 100’s! It was well worth the drive. After hitting the summit we went followed the lollipop trail, we ran into a 4 foot rattlesnake! I was with a Ranger and she said that it was the biggest one that she had ever seen. Bring hiking poles and hit the ground as your walking, she said the vibration scares them away usually.

Was expecting the peak itself to have more views than it does... Turns out the trees mostly obscure the view the. However the Southwest portion of the loop has spectacular views. Overall a very enjoyable hike, with a nice mix of forested paths, meadows, and rocky open areas.

Spectacular hike! Something for everyone. Forest, open meadows, a burned out hillside, and fantastic views. Easy 5 mile hike with minimal elevation gain. Has bathroom at trailhead. Hiked in May. Perfect day hike.

Amazing views that are varied and interesting. You get to walk into where a fire came through years ago and see how nature has recovered.
