GOLD BAR RIM
Trail Length: 3.8 miles Low-End Rating: 5 High-End Rating: 6 This is a shorter trail in two separate parts, easy at first and then difficult. If you run it as the end of the trio of trails starting with Poison Spider Mesa and Golden Spike, the trail will be run backwards and go from difficult to easy. If you are looking for a moderate but fun Moab trail you can run the first section of this trail until Slide Rock, a large slab of slickrock usually covered with sand. If you came from the Gold Bar Rim trailhead the slope will be a downhill one and difficult to miss. You can make this first half of the trail as easy or difficult as you wish. There is also a challenging optional hill in the first half, as well, called Improbable Hill. Coming from the easy end you'll see a slickrock hill that is basically flat on the left side and very steep on the right side. There are tire marks the entire length of this slickrock and you can attempt the hill in many different sections to find your own challenges. Improbable Hill is on the far right side and covered with black marks. It may or may not be possible depending on your vehicle and how you drive it. The Undercut Ledge is also optional and probably impossible unless you have big tires and lots of clearance. It is a long ledge with many different lines up and down it. It is much like Double Whammy on Golden Spike though it is only one ledge. If you are running the whole thing, Slide Rock is a fun obstacle marking the beginning of the second half. The second half of the trail has some slickrock areas and sandy portions, and some challenging rocky areas to work your way through. You also travel along a ridge that can be a little scary. The overlook at the far end is only a few yards past the turn-off for Golden Spike. It also includes a pair of difficult shelf obstacles very near the edge. You can see Moab and beyond from way up at the top, and this would make a great spot for lunch.
