BSP 2021 February.
Stayed the night in Oreno to save some driving time Thursday morning. Met up with Kim, Natalie and Joanne at Abol Bridge at 10:30. Headed on to park at Telos road and Williams Pond Road parking. Started in at 11:50am. Trail was unbroken for a while, but had seen some snowmobile traffic recently. At around 3 miles the faint track we had been following turned to the left and we continued straight. This made the trail breaking more challenging. Even the very tiny inclines in deep snow on skis made for hard travel, so some of us decided to switch over to snowshoes. As a whole, the group was experiencing some gear issues, broken carabiners. Snowshoes not staying attached to the ski boots, frozen snd jammed ski bindings etc. some bad words may have been uttered by some at times... Forward progress was slow. Sometime after 4 the moon began to rise, it was a beautiful site to behold. But we hadn’t reached the BSP boundry yet. As darkness began to fall, we all donned our headlamps to continue the journey, even though the moon was nearly full, it was a mostly cloudy night. We finally reached the red sign marking the park boundry. The ‘road’ forward on the map is marked as continuing straight and ending up at nesownehunk fields. The ranger that morning had said continue on the road and it turns into the trail and ends at the field. All I saw in the dark was a bunch of jumbled gullies and large blow downs. We re-grouped and discussed what to do. And decided to keep on the road. After multiple falls and hurdles and dumps and walking about rescuing wayward pulks and only making about 20’ of progress, other options were scouted out and the trail to the right at the boundry sign was decided it was actually the trail, complete with many blue reflective ski markers. Trail finding and breaking trail was MUCH faster and easier in the woods. Except for the start of the trail, it is very well marked. We soon popped out in the field across the river from our destination. After a few false starts in very deep drifts, the road over the bridge was found and every landmark was a relief! After 7 hours and 55 minutes we made it safe and sound to our wonderful cabin in the woods.
