Mt St Helens via Worm Flows Route

Explore this 10.5-mile out-and-back trail near Cougar, Washington.
Widely regarded as a challenging route, this trail is extremely popular for backpacking, camping, and hiking, so expect to encounter others along the way. The trail is open year-round and offers beauty in every season — but note that dogs are not allowed.
This is a demanding alpine route requiring proper gear and preparation. Ice axes, crampons, and avalanche awareness are essential. In snowy conditions, skis with climbing skins or snowshoes with cleats are highly recommended. Starting from the Marble Mountain Sno-Park, follow the Swift Ski Trail (#244) to reach timberline. Just above Chocolate Falls at 3,700 feet, cross to the west side of Swift Creek and follow ridges and open slopes to the crater rim.
Wooden route markers guide climbers from timberline to approximately 4,800 feet elevation. The full round trip is roughly 12 miles and typically takes 7 to 10 hours.
Safety tips: Avoid avalanche-prone slopes and gully bottoms, and steer clear of cornices near the crater rim. Always check current conditions before attempting this route.
