Madison Buffalo Jump State Monument Loop
Overview
This is a easy loop trail in Madison Buffalo Jump State Park. This trail goes by Madison Buffalo Jump State Monument
There are 3 main approaches you can take to the cliffs: to the left (North) is a trail along the ridge that goes back a little over a mile to a fence line; turn right and proceed down through a juniper-filled canyon, then back up to the opposite side. Turn right again and head back toward the cliffs along the ridge. Descend on the path on the North side of the cliff. You can also ascend on this same path.
Finally, you can head to the Pavilion (which has some great history on the site and its significance to indigenous peoples of this area), then take the path to the right (South) and make your way up to the far cliffs, then circle back to the left (North) until you reach the cliffs of Buffalo Jump.
The great part about Buffalo Jump is that you simply cannot get lost; if you take a wrong turn, it's easy to reorient yourself.
Getting Started
There is a large parking lot and public bathroom at the trailhead.
Taking Children
This is a great place for kids, since there are so many different trails to explore. There is almost no shade at all in the summer, so be sure to bring protection.
