Overview

This is a fairly easy out and back trail in Gilford, New Hampshire. While it is just a bit over 2 miles round trip, depending on which route you take (summer or winter) it does have 1222 feet of elevation gain, so there is a bit of work involved! There is a lovely view spot on the way up that has a picnic table, perfect for south views that include Mt. Keasarge. The summer route is slightly longer and was established to decrease the erosion taking place on the steeper, more direct winter route. Since it is on the south side of the mountain, and gets more sun, the upper ledge areas on the summer route can be boilerplate ice early in the season, requiring traction and extreme caution. Both routes intersect with the Ridge Trail, and are clearly blazed with signage at the intersections. The Gunstock Mountain trail terminates at the summit of Gunstock Ski Area, with breathtaking views of Lake Winnipesaukee, the Ossipee Mountains, parts of the Sandwich Range, Mount Chocorua, and even Mount Washington if conditions are right.

This trail goes by Belknap Mountain State Forest.

Getting Started

Parking is limited on the Carriage Road, with only 4 cars fitting into the parking lot just before the gate. Roadside parking is allowed for a short distance, and those who park in the no-parking zone will be ticketed. From the parking area, go past the gate, down the hill for a very short distance, and the Gunstock Mountain Trail will leave on your left.

Taking Children

We have done this hike with our 5 year old grandson and he did quite well. He found salamanders and lots of mushrooms along the way, all of which keep his interest.

This hike packs a lot of bang for your buck. Though short, it offers enough elevation gain to get your heart pumping. The views from the summit are always spectacular, even on a cloudy day. The trail was snow-covered for our hike, but not firmly consolidated, so we took the winter route and used snowshoes the entire time. Our pace was slow because we were talking the whole time, but generally this hike takes about 45 minutes to get to the summit.
