Overview

This is a moderate loop trail in Arkansas taking you to the highest point in the state.

Getting Started

Park at the lodge at Mount Magazine and walk over to the trailhead.

Mount Magazine is the home of the highest point in Arkansas. Like all the other trails in the park, Signal Hill is well signed, well marked, well maintained and well used.

While not overly challenging, you can expect a slow and steady climb up to the peak. The trail will take you up through the woods, and in some areas you will step up and around rocks and tree roots. There are several small drainage creeks to cross, but these are normally dry unless there has been recent and sustained rainfall.

To complete the loop back to the trail head, follow the trail marked ‘self guided trail’. This trail connects ascent/descent points.

Taking Children

This would be a good trail for children, 8 out of 10. There are no major obstacles to navigate, although the length may be challenging for toddlers

On my date of hike, Sat 12.12.20, we had completed several other trails on the Mountain. It was a cold day, and had rained fairly heavily the day prior. This trail wasn’t at all muddy though, no slick or rough spots at all. At about half way up on the climb, the trees and other vegetation were covered in frozen fog, making the scene look like a magnificent winter wonderland. This is also a dog friendly (on leash) hike. My lab, super Leeds, had a great time!
