Overview

Silver Peak is a less-traveled gem, offering solitude, natural beauty, and a rewarding challenge for experienced hikers. Silver Peak is in the Cave Creek Canyon area of Coronado National Forest in SE Arizona. Climb 3000' over 10 miles RT to the site of a former lookout tower with sweeping views.

The hike begins with ~20 short switchbacks through a pine-oak grassland. The route transitions to contour the rocky slope with striking views of the surrounding wilderness. More steep switchbacks lead toward the peak. At the saddle below the summit find the old lookout storage shed and privy. Ascend stone steps to the remains of the lookout. The peak offers panoramic vistas of the Chiricahua Mountains, nearby ranges, and the expansive desert valleys below. On clear days, you can see into Mexico.

Season: Late spring through fall is ideal. Winter snow can make the trail challenging.
Time of Day: Morning hikes are best to avoid afternoon storms or heat.
