Overview

This is a moderate out and back trail to Chimney Tops in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

This trail goes by Trickling Falls and Chimney Tops Trailhead Parking.

Getting Started

The parking area and trailhead for the Chimney Tops is located on Newfound Gap Road, 6.7 miles south of the Sugarlands Visitor Center. The 2.0 mile trail is a very popular hike and the dual peak “chimneys” on top of the mountain are a famous landmark for good reason. It is moderately steep gaining 1,350 ft. in elevation.

The trail begins by crossing a footbridge over Walker Camp Prong. Almost immediately the trail crosses Road Prong on another bridge. Walker Camp and Road Prong come together here to form the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River which flows through Gatlinburg, Tennessee. After the 2nd bridge the trail turns south and heads up the side of a ridge. At 0.2 miles the trail crosses Road Prong again. It is here that fly fishermen can access the creek to catch the native Brook Trout. Fishing upstream, Road Prong is a beautiful and classic Brook Trout stream with pool after picturesque pool.

Staying on the trail, high above Road Prong, the trail will again cross the prong at 0.7 miles in a cove called Beech Flats. Just past this bridge, Road Prong Trail turns off to the left and follows Road Prong up to the Appalachian Trail at Indian Gap on Clingmans Dome Road.

The Chimney Tops trail, stays to the right, and begins a long steady and steep climb up Sugarland Mountain reaching the top of the Chimneys at 2.0 miles. Because of the recent fire, the trail is currently closed before reaching the summit. However there is a nice new lookout area with views of the valley below.

This is still a nice steep trail if you want a good workout. Due to the fire and the closing of the scramble to the last part / best part of the hike, I have given this a 1/5 stars. Used to be 4/5. No views anymore.

This trail has recently been redone, and the description is accurate. Be aware the very top section, the one described as" the scramble" is currently closed off due to unstable soil as a result of the fire. It is unlikely to be reopened anytime soon. However the trail ends at a beautiful overlook where you can see the chimney, and this makes for a nice hike. This is not a hike for out of shape beginners; it is quite literally a 2 hour walk straight up. When we started, the whole valley was in pea soup fog and it was drizzling. However the trail was above the fog and it was very clear. Typical of the Smokies, the trail is rocky, goes up a lot, and weather is unpredictable, but well worth the effort.

Great Smoky Mountain NP Chimney Tops trail 6/11/20 7:09:34 AM
A nice, albeit steep, walk up to the Chimney Tops area. They have the trail blocked off before you can get to the actual Chimney Tops - apparently because the area hasn't recovered enough from the 2016 forest fire. We went early in the morning and met with clouds and low visibility at the top. A little disappointing but the walk was still beautiful due to blooming wildflowers.

Chimney Tops
A great day hike for beginners with a huge payoff view if you make it to the top. It is pretty much up all they way but the trail is very nice with cool wood and stone steps. The last 100 vertical feet is a scramble up near vertical slabs of slate.

Trek #5: Chimney Tops GSMNP
The trail was cut back by .25 miles due to a fire in 2016. It would have been a great rock scramble to the top!
