Overview

This is a moderate loop trail to Travertine Springs in Castle Rock State Park.

This trail goes by Castle Rock Falls, Goat Rock, Goat Rock Overlook, Emily Smith Observation Point, Russel Point, Main Camp, Castle Rock Trail Camp, and Frog Flat Camp.

Taking Children

This loop hike maybe too long for children. Alternately you may take them only to Travertine springs, or hike with them in Castle Rock State Park where (assuming they are old enough) you may let the climb on some of the rock formations.

This is an alternate route for Emily Smith Observation Point Loop.

Beginning from the Saratoga Gap Vista Point parking, we took the Skyline to the Sea/Saratoga Toll Road trail about 3 miles before turning left towards Travertine Springs. From here we climbed to the Castle Rock campsite (restroom available), continuing to Goat Rock, Castle Rock Waterfalls, Castle Rock, old park’s parking lot (restroom available), crossing Hwy35/Skyline Blvd, and returning to the parking lot on the Skyline/Bay Area Ridge Trail.

Skyline to the Sea - Day 1 Alternatives
I'll be backpacking the Skyline to the Sea trail next week, and I wanted to check out alternatives to the standard Day 1 hike, which is right along Hwy 9. There are two other ways to get to Waterman Gap:1) Starting from Castle Rock State Park, take Saratoga Gap trail to the campground, then pick up Tavertine Spring Trail. This was a lovely trail which skirted the huge wooded valley to the west. You meet up with the Saratoga Toll Road and take that south to join the regular Skyline to the Sea trail.2) Starting from the parking lot at the intersection of 35 and 9, take the Saratoga Toll Road down to connect to Skyline to the Sea. Gradual descent, mostly wide, except for some of the early part. Lots of poison oak on both trails.

Saratoga Gap Vista Pt to Castle Rock SP Loop
A great hike - starting at the Saratoga Gap Vista Point Parking lot, going down along the Skyline to the Sea/Saratoga Toll Road trail for about 3 miles before turning left towards Travertine Spring and continuing into the Castle Rock State Park. From there returning to the parking lot via the tree covered Skyline Trail. Enjoyable hike despite temperatures being in the high 70's.
