Overview

This is an easy to moderate, shaded one way trail in Cibola National Forest leading to the crest. It also crosses the 10k, Oso Corredor Trail 265, and Crest Trail.

You get to enjoy some great views to the north and east on the upper half of this trail. I recommend continuing west at the top for just 100-150 m to get a beautiful view of Albuquerque.

This trail is popular with mountain bikers, too, so keep an eye out, but they are usually courteous and respectful.

If you're into geocaching, this trail features several fairly easy caches.

Getting Started

Follow the Crest Road up; the trailhead is clearly marked shortly after the 5 mile point. Don't forget the $3.00 fee per day/vehicle. Parking can be difficult on the weekends because this trail is very popular, so come early.

Taking Children

Very pleasant trail, but it's 2 miles moderately uphill. Age 6+ should be fine up and back.

Started at 8am on August 29th, 2021, a beautiful Sunday and the hike in the trail covered with trees was cool . On the way back it was very busy with people and their dogs but very friendly. Great hike , short of Sandia Peak by 1/2 mile.

Trails transitioning from snow covered to patchy snow/ice. A lot of downed trees, due to recent high winds. Still a favorite hike though.

Tree Spring Trail+
This is a nice trail that connects to the Sandia Crest trail. It’s mostly wooded, with a gradual climb, but mostly easy hiking. It’s a popular trailhead, which could make parking tricky. We hiked slightly past the end of the Tree Spring trail onto the North-bound Crest trail to an over look where you can see Albuquerque.
