Halemauu Trailhead Loop via Crater Road(edit)

Overview

This is a difficult loop trail to Halemauu Trailhead in Haleakalā National Park.

This trail goes by Haleakala Visitor Center, Sliding Sands Trailhead, White Hill, Kaulupō, Kamoaopele, Kawilinau Gulch (65 feet deep), Halāliʻi, Silversword Loop Trail, Hōlua Campground, Hōlua Cabin, Park Headquarters Visitor Center, Leleiwi Overlook Trailhead, Leleiwi Overlook, and Kilohana.

Getting Started

This is my annual pilgrimage route which is ideal in the summer months. I begin at the summit but drop a vehicle at the trail end at Halema'u trailhead. Backpacking and tent camping at Paliku then Holua beaks up the miles and extends your adventures in this magical place. One of the highlights is sleeping by the nesting Hawaiian Petrel (U'au) which talk to their chicks thorough out the night (so soothing and such a rare sound).
