Yellow Hill Road
Overview
This is a moderate out and back trail in Leo Carrillo State Park in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Check with the Ranger Station for this area for up to date trail conditions as this trail may have been affected by recent fire activity, Fire status: http://www.parks.ca.gov/NewsRelease/852 or 800-444-7275.
Getting Started
This hike starts on the near the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Mulholland Highway. You can park for free on Pacific Coast Highway across the street from the ocean. Carefully check the parking restriction signs. There are typically lots of cars parked along the highway because of the beaches and Leo Carrillo. Although this hike is actually in Leo Carrillo you don't enter the hike from the park entrance.
The entrance is on Mulholland Highway on the left hand side a few hundred feet from PCH. There is a dirt fire road with a vehicle gate that you can pass.
The hike is mostly surrounded by low grass land. There are excellent views of the ocean most of the way up. There are also beautiful views of the mountains to the north. The trail is climbing the whole way. You will stop at private property, there is a sign. The trail does veer off to the left at that point and continue a little way, but you are on private land at that point and it's not clear if there is an easement, best to turn around at that point. The trail is wide most of the way
Also the hike starts in Leo Carrillo Land but does cross some private land and also you're in United States part of the time.
It appears that dogs are not allowed on this trail.

Taking Children
This trail doesn't have many features and you are climbing the whole way. However the wide fire road and open vista could make it easy for a family, but probably small children would find it hard.
