North Fork of Coal Wash

Wash roads in Utah are common, but this one is really a nice treat. Entering from the West side of the San Rafael Swell, the North Fork of Coal Wash is an easy but scenic way into the iconic network of trails this area is known for. Also along its borders is Swasey's Arch, a massive stone structure reminding you just how small we really are in this world. Be sure to take some time to get out or enjoy the sights along the way as you wind your way down this awesome sandy wash.
The North Fork of Coal Wash is a great ride with some big open areas to really lay down the pedal. You do enter into Sid's Mountain Wilderness Study Area early on in this trail so leaving the trail is prohibited. After a short while, you will come across some ledges and an ascent you must climb. Once you reach the gate, be sure to close it behind you. Shortly after the gate, the trail opens up into a nice wide sandy bottom and continues this way for a good majority of the remaining trail. There is one patch before the intersection with Devil's Racetrack where the trail stays wide, but it is all stone and you can pick your line through. There are many places that will give you no challenge at all. As you wind down the wash from Devil's Racetrack, it will start becoming narrower until you reach the end, which also marks the beginning of Fixit Pass.
