High Peaks via Juniper Canyon Trail
Overview
Great lollipop loop to High Peaks, the signature hike in Pinnacles National Park — big views, steady climbing, and tight squeezes through wild volcanic spires.
From the Chaparral Picnic Area, the Juniper Canyon Trail follows a mostly dry drainage for about 0.7 miles before ascending through a series of short switchbacks. Shade is hit-or-miss, but the views are outstanding.
Turn onto the Tunnel Trail at the junction to hike the loop clockwise and ascend the steep sections of High Peaks. After passing through the short man-made tunnel and grinding up a few more switchbacks, you’ll reach the High Peaks Trail.
This section is the payoff — steep stone steps (with helpful metal handrails), narrow ledges, and dramatic rock towers all around. It’s fun, a little exposed, and classic Pinnacles. Keep an eye out for California condors riding the thermals. Rejoin the Juniper Canyon Trail to descend and close the loop.
Getting Started
Park in the Chaparral Picnic Area at the west entrance of the park. Arrive early on weekends as the lot may fill. There is additional parking at the Jawbone Flat Parking area, 0.3 miles up the road. Note: You cannot drive across the park from the east entrance to the west entrance.
Taking Children
Not appropriate for pre-teens due to distance, elevation gain, and very steep terrain along High Peaks.
