Herring Cove to Beaver Lake
Overview
This trail ascends from the gravel trailhead at sea level to a beautiful lake nestled on the north slope of Bear Mountain.
The artfully designed trail winds through a boulder archway and up a stone staircase along a waterfall. The climb is steep, but doesn't last long before you gain the ridge about Beaver Lake and descend to a lovely subalpine loop. Pull-offs, piers, and benches offer scenic picnic spots for hikers.
Getting Started
The signed trailhead and parking lot is located at the southern end of Sitka's road system, a couple miles past the end of the paved road at Sawmill Cove.
The trail starts on City of Sitka lands and ascends into the Tongass National Forest.
Taking Children
The big stone steps and steep ascent may be tough for children under the age of 8, so budget extra time if you're bringing little ones.
