The Lahaina Pali Trail is a must do trail if you’re a regular visitor to Maui. Don’t take this trail for granted as it can be daunting if done at the wrong time of day. The Lahaina Pali trail is a through hike of just under five miles and is not suitable for everyone. Person with moderate hiking skills should be able to complete, but beginners should put it off for another time. Bring plenty of water, hydrate often and a must is hiking shoes or boots. You’re guaranteed a bloody toe if you wear flip-flops. Maximum elevation for the through hike is 1420 feet. The trail is rocky and exposed its entire length. Just remember, if through hiking, you’re going to need a ride back to your car, or friends to swap keys with have-way through the hike at the windmills. There are two clearly marked trailheads, both of which are on Route 30. If coming from Kahului on route 380 turn left at the stop light. The trailhead is located approximately .6 of a mile, from there on route 30 on the right. A gravel road to the right of the gate will take you back to the trailhead. The road is passable with little difficulty. The parking lot is small, but, rarely full. The second, trailhead is located 5.5 miles further down the road toward Lahaina where a small shaded parking lot is located on the right. This parking lot does get busy on the weekends. Chose your trailhead and begin your adventure. If starting at the first trailhead you ascend upwards is gradual at first and the turns into an average grade of 11% up to the windmills. Elevation change up to the windmills is 1267 feet. The trail is rocky with both large and small rocks along the entire path. If starting from the second trailhead your ascent begins immediately. When reaching the old stagecoach trail look for the white painted arrow on the ground to follow the trail. The old stagecoach trail is not the trail you should be on. This trail is also rocky and steeper than the first trail, but the views are magnificent. Elevation on this trail will max out at 1420 feet. Remember to start early before the sun tops the mountains, or schedule for a cloudy day. Whether choosing the through hike or the out and back; Be careful and enjoy!
