Schonchin Butte Fire Lookout via Schonchin Lookout Trail
Overview
The hike to the Schonchin Butte Fire Lookout in Lava Beds National Monument is a short but rewarding climb to one of the best viewpoints in Lava Beds National Monument.
The paved CCC-built trail climbs steadily up the side of the volcanic cinder cone for about 0.7 miles with 500' gain. At the top sits the historic fire lookout, with interpretive signs and wide views over the lava flows, cinder cones, and distant peaks of the Cascade Range. On the return, complete the short loop around the peak to rejoin the trail and descend back to the trailhead.
Getting Started
Two miles north of the Visitors Center on Hill Road, turn right (east) onto the Schonchin access road. The road heads toward and then around to the backside of Schonchin Butte. There is a large parking area and a vault toilet.
Taking Children
Nice hike for children. While the trail gains 500' in only 0.7 miles, the trail is wide, the grade is consistent, and there are opportunities to stop and rest.
