Yellow Mountain Fire Tower from Cole Gap
Overview
This is a moderate out and back hike with some steep sections, and the trail goes through pretty forest the whole way. You will first climb up and over Cole and Shortoff Mountains, and there are a couple of nice overlooks a short distance off trail that you will want to see. The user trails to them are obvious. After a steep descent, the next couple miles are more gradual ups and downs, and you may be able to spot the fire tower at the peak of Yellow Mtn through the trees.
The ascent up Yellow Mtn is steeper, but the beautiful views and the interesting tower are well worth it. The return hike is very pleasant, but prepare for the steep ascent to get back up Shortoff Mtn.
Getting Started
The trailhead starts along the side of a road. There is room for a few cars on either side of the road.
Taking Children
This trail is fine for children, though the distance and difficulty would prevent most young children from doing the whole thing.
