Kings Canyon National Park Lookout Peak 8510ft
Decided to attempt Lookout Peak as expected to have much nicer views for Sierra Mountains before snow melted than other options and hoping will encounter nice wildflowers. Plan to summit about 1pm and back about 4pm.
Almost gave up and thinking to attempt Big Baldy after about 2.3 miles due to hot weather. Turned back about 0.2 miles and 150ft.
Hiked this trail more than 10 years ago, could be 12-13 years ago. Also hiked from Big Meadows which was much easier and shorter.
2 hikers, one from Singaporeore, spent almost one hour to try to find the way to hike up the last 0.2-0.3 miles to Lookout Peak
8:45am - Heading out from Don Cecil Trailhead at about 4700ft
10:45am - Decided to heading back after 2.35 miles / 1600ft in 2 hours with waiting and taking Sheep Creek Cascade Waterfalls and big bees photos at 6300ft.
11:10am - Back to 6300ft at 2.75 miles. About 0.4 miles and 150ft extra in 25 minutes
12:45pm - Kings Canyon National Park/Sequoia National Forest boundary at 7965ft after 4 hours for 5.2 miles and 3265 ft. 4.8 miles Don Cecil Trail matched with Park Map there.
13:15pm - Arrived Lookout Peak lower antenna at 5.65 miles 8475ft after 4.5 hours of hiking. This was about 30 minutes for 0.45 miles and about 500 ft. The other 2 hikers spent more than one hour.
13:45pm - Heading back at 5.7 miles 8522ft per Gaia which may be right as Summit Post showed Lookout Peak with 8531ft, not 8510ft, after considering about 10ft away from Summit which climbed in my last trip.
14:25pm - Back to Kings Canyon National Park Boundary at 6.1 miles 7970ft
16:35pm - Back to Sheep Creek Cascade Waterfalls at 10.1 miles after 7 hours 50 minutes
17:15pm - Back to Trailhead after 11 miles 3900 ft in 8.5 hours. Will be 10.6 miles 3815ft per Alltrail if not taking extra 0.4 miles by turning back.
Unlikely will consider this hike for the next few years as not easy!!!
