Balconies Cliffs-Cave Loop
Overview
This is a fun lollipop loop hike, with a lot of variety packed into a short hike. The route mixes open high-desert scenery with a cool, dark talus cave you hike right through.
You start along the cliffs with big rock formations and views over the canyon. The trail is mostly exposed, so it can heat up fast. Look for condors overhead — this is prime territory.
Complete the loop clockwise, first the Balconies Cliff Trail. Drop to shady West Fork Chalone Creek to meet the Balconies Cave Trail. The cave section is the highlight. It’s not a traditional cave but a jumble of boulders forming tunnels and narrow passages. Depending on the season, you might wade through a little water. A headlamp helps, and expect some ducking and squeezing. Check with park staff to ensure the cave is open.
Getting Started
Park in the Chaparral Picnic Area at the west entrance of the park. Arrive early on weekends as the lot may fill. There is additional parking at the Jawbone Flat Parking area, 0.3 miles up the road.
Note: You cannot drive across the park from the east entrance to the west entrance.
