Orcas Knob(edit)

Sunday. Day after a rugged trail marathon. I thoroughly enjoyed and was reenergized by waking up, without an alarm or other person, and being immersed in the positive energy of my Inn room, over-looking the bay. Did a half hour of quality stretching. A late ferry departure and room checkout meant I had wonderful options. Sleep more, wander Orcas Island Main Street or go hike/run. I planned to return to the Mt Constitution trailhead and waterfalls, but then realized, the Orcas Island half-marathon was happening there. Karma intervened and took me across the island to Turtleback Mountain Preserve and trails. “Mountain” as in I started climbing right out of the trailhead. After I had my “are you fucking kidding me” moment, I soon realized the stunning panoramic views were well worth the climbs. And it just kept getting better. I made a mad dash for Orcas Knob knowing I was pushing the fringe of a late checkout. Then the magic happened…the lethargy and race residual soreness washed away and I was suddenly a trail runner. Flying along pristine single track that opened up on to a plateau with views that blew my mind. Sweeping vistas of the San Juan Islands and even into Canada. What a special moment! Made so because I am a trail runner, making the most of incredible opportunities by experiencing life on the run. Had to haul ass back down the main trail and hustle back to the Inn, checking out with a minute to spare. It’s how I roll. Life is so much more enjoyable when I’m not tethered to anyone and literally run free. Reality Bites. This Orcas Island trip confirmed that good things happen with a lot of planning, a little luck, an open mind and a free spirit.
