12-24-18 - Eagle mtn. Beautiful winter wounderland in Minnesota’s BWCA Superior National Forest. MN’s highest point. Attempted this hike a year ago with -20° & very windy (doable with good clothes & boots). About 2/3 rds way, at Whale lake, snow became too deep and we didn’t have snow shoes. Today it was +19° and calm with fresh snow. Stunning. Made it to the top. Snow shoes not needed today. From Whale Lake junction up to summit we did use Yaktrax - like ice cleats on our boots as terrain gets steeper and uneven with rocks beneath snow. Hiking poles helpful this last section too. No problem following the trail & Gaia worked great. Amazing,, but at the summit we had cell phone and data reception. But not along the trail or at trail head though. Fresh snow hanging heavy on trees and view from near top make this hike a must do in the winter.
