Overview

The Old Salmon River Trail is an easy hike; short, relatively flat and easy to access, through old-growth forest with towering Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar. The trail is tucked between the Salmon River and Salmon River Road. The area can be crowded with day hikers, campers and fishermen. It is a great fall hike with fewer crowds than summer, warmer and less chance of snow than further up Mt. Hood and fewer cars on the road. The hike is out and back or car shuttle.

Getting Started

The trail parallels the Salmon River Road and can be accessed from several locations. Follow Forest Service directions 2.6 miles up Salmon River Road from Highway 26 to an obvious and signed pull-out to the right to start at the northernmost point. The trail can also be accessed at Green Canyon Campground. Green Canyon Campground has a day-use area with picnic tables and toilets; however, it is closed in late Sept. until late May. Park at the Salmon River West trailhead just before the Salmon River Road crosses the Salmon River over a bridge to start at the southern most point of the trail. There are additional pull-outs for parking along Salmon River Road.

Taking Children

This is a great hike for children. It is relatively flat.

Nice fall colors which are quickly blowing away due to high winds. Not crowded. Almost no road noise. The water level was high and river raging.
