Overview

NOTE: Road Closure on Forest Service Road (FSR) 1861: A landslide occurred on Nov. 12, 2021 closing multiple sections of Forest Service Road (FSR) 1861. The first landslide occurred about 100 feet west of Highway 101 on FSR 1861. The road is impassible and closed to vehicles. Hart’s Cove Trail #1303 can be accessed by hiking the Rainforest Trail #1310 (previously known as Cascade Head Trail). The second landslide occurred near the town of Rose Lodge on a portion of the southern segment of FSR 1861. The closure starts near the FSR 1861 intersection with State Highway 18 and ends at the Forest Service boundary gate, approximately 1.5 miles northwest of State Highway 18.

This is a moderate out and back trail to Harts Cove in Siuslaw National Forest. The trail switchbacks down through the forest, crosses Cliff Creek, then levels out. The trail enters a meadow where wildflowers bloom in spring and summer. The trail ends at a viewpoint of Harts Cove where a waterfall plunges into the ocean.

Note from the Siuslaw National Forest: There is a seasonal area closure from January 1 to July 15 to protect sensitive nesting habitat. During this time, please do not hike on any roads, trails, or off-trail areas on National Forest lands north of the Salmon River. The exception is The Rainforest Trail, which remains open to hiking use year-round. This seasonal closure does not apply to lands managed by The Nature Conservancy.

Getting Started

The trailhead is at the end of the road where there is parking. The trail heads into the trees near the signboard.

Taking Children

There are steep drop-offs at the cliffs at the end of the hike. Also remember that the hike back to your car will be uphill.

First time doing this hike and it was really nice. Started at about 10:30 am on a Saturday. Weren’t many people on the way in, but it became much more crowded on the way out. Beautiful views of the cove at the end. Heard a lot of sea lions. Saw lots of different mushrooms. Not muddy at all. All down hill on the way in and uphill on the way out. Moderate hike, good workout.

Mid-July walk - perfect time to go as the weather is dry. We got there early to beat the crowds - the place is very popular - and were treated to great views and watched the sea lions on the rocks. Fog rolled in as we left (about 10 a.m.) covering things for the large number of late arriving throngs we saw as we returned on the trail. The trail itself has some really large hemlocks (2nd or 3rd growth?) I can only imagine what the old growth was like.
