Overview

This is a difficult out and back trail to Catamount Mountain in Adirondack Park. Although short, it includes some steep sections that involves climbing using your hands. At one point towards the top, there is a short chimney that you need to climb up. There are nice views at the top of Whiteface as well as Taylor Pond, Silver Lake and Union Falls Lake.

Getting Started

There is parking at the trailhead for approximately 15 cars. The trail register is visible from the parking area. There is a large sign on the road marking the parking area.

Taking Children

The beginning of the hike is flat and wide. Further on, there are large steps and steep sections.

Lots of rock sides to climb. Hard to make through some sections with a baby harness. Kids did great. Finn did it all by himself.

This is a great hike but it’s definitely not an “easy” hike. It requires quite a lot of climbing through very narrow rocky spaces towards the end. The last rock-climbing section is inaccessible even for large, athletic dogs - we had to turn around. Make sure you have hiking boots on.

Catamount Mtn.
Seems like I only got a partial recording as the tracking stopped at the summit. We did successfully make it down the mountain! I found this to be a surprisingly difficult climb, maybe it was because we did it in less than ideal conditions? We had a late-season, light snow which put about an inch on the ground making for some slippery conditions up high. The lack of visibility was also a little unnerving when close to the edge.
