Overview

This is a easy one way trail to [Waimoku Falls]. This is the most popular trail in this section of Haleakala National Park. You walk through a bamboo forest, and get to see several waterfalls, ending at the stunning Waimoku Falls.

Getting Started

You must access this trail through the National Park fee station. The park closes at 5pm, so they tell you that you can't start it after 2pm.

Taking Children

This is a great hike for children. Bonus: Mango trees drop fruit along the trail.

Nice hike through lush vegetation and then bamboo forest, with the 400’ falls at the end. Great way to cap the road to Hana.

We started at about 10. Took 2h15 min RT. Can be slippery. Part of it is boardwalk. A couple bridges. The park service has created several rock steps. Lots of exposed roots in the first half mile. Easy to trip. I would try to get to parking lot earlier to avoid hiking in the heat of the day.

Take the road to Hana backwards first thing in the morning. That way you’ll get there earlier than the crowd.

Wonderful Maui hike, even in the rain. I would rate it as moderate difficulty, as the trail becomes muddy and slick when wet, and rain is common here. Highlights for me were the bamboo forest and the final falls, although worthwhile views were numerous.

An easy to moderate trail depending on your conditioning. Some short sections are fairly steep but with well defined paths. Humidity can be a factor. Carry enough water. The bamboo forest and the Waimoku Falls are the two highlights. There's also a large old banyan tree on this trail that's really majestic. Spend some time in the bamboo forest so that you can hear the the spooky sound of the bamboo trees rustling against each other.
