Overview
Considered a 'hidden gem' of the White Mountains, the Welch Dickey Loop trail passes over both Welch Mountain and Dickey Mountain.
This is a difficult loop trail with strenuous uphill and fantastic views of the surrounding mountains.
This trail traverses several steep granite slabs that can be very slick and dangerous when wet. This hike is best enjoyed after a day or two without rain.
Expect this hike to take 2-4 hours.
Getting Started
There is parking at the trailhead. This trail is a day-use fee site. A day pass costs $5.
You can pay with cash or check upon arrival and must put display the recreation tag on your dash.
Some parks passes are permissible in lieu of the day use fee. These include:
- White Mountain National Forest Annual Pass
- White Mountain National Forest Household Pass
- Interagency Pass
- Golden Age Pass
- Golden Access pass
Once you're ready to hike, hang a right on the trailhead follow the yellow blazes!
Taking Children
This hike may be suitable for some children. The uphill is very strenuous and there are some steep sections or areas with sharp drop-offs. If it has rained recently, the trail can be very slick and dangerous.

Welch ledge is reached within a mile, awesome view, thought this was the summit for a good minute, but the views get way better about .6 miles to the summit of Welch, full 360 views!Definitely a steep hike right from the beginning, lots of granite slabs and rock scrambles to climb, wouldn’t recommend doing this hike after rain. Lots of sunlight on this loop, not much shading from trees. Trail is well marked and maintained. Such an amazing hike!

The vistas are incredible, with huge sections of granite slab with sparse tree line to block views. There are definitely steep sections of slab, so would advise going on a dry day like we did. It’s a fairly popular route for good reason, parking was not an issue; they recommended counter clockwise so though we were definitely not alone, all hikers were going in the same direction around the loop.

What an amazing hike. We reached the top around sunset and the views were some of the best you can get. This was a tough hike, but great practice for longer hikes in the area. It was nice and dry and I would not want to go if it was wet or had rained recently. I brought my dogs and they did just fine. We went on a weeknight and had the trail almost all to ourselves. There is a currently an active beehive on the West side of Mt. Dickey. It's roped off and there are instructions to get around it safely.

Start slowly and had a such great time . Views was great even little hazy. We both had to try out regardless we both deal with pains. Good to be out today. So happy that I was on the mountains
After hike, we stop the The Eddy Day use for our feet get wet. Water felt great, wish we had a bath suit though!
