Tank Lakes Day 2 (Return)
Woke up to an amazing bluebird morning at Tank Lakes!! The whole area is incredible-right on par with Thunder Mountain Lakes and Tuck and Robin Lakes for some of the most amazing scenery (at least that I’ve seen yet) in the ALW! There were a few others camped up there but really not bad at all for an August weekend, plus there is so much area up there for people to spread out that it didn’t feel crowded at all. On the hike back down we stopped at Ilswoot Lake for some fishing and I caught a really nice ~13” rainbow on a New Zealand dropper (it bit on the nymph underneath a foam ant!). Also went for a dip since it was a perfect 75 degrees or so out and the water felt amazing! I know Ilswoot has some bigger fish and I didn’t even get to fish several of the other lakes in the area! (Locket Lake is of special interest...emerald had fish but was very shallow and they looked small, same with Jade, Opal and the Tank Lakes appeared to be barren). Absolutely one of the best backpacks ever and would very much want to re-visit this one someday!
Day1.Emerald Lake
Start at the Necklace Valley Trailhead and hike up the valley to Emerald Lake Camp. We should park a car or two at the West Fork Foss Lakes Trailhead to allow us to skip walking the 2.5 miles along the road back to our start point.
