LONG LAKE TO SHATTUCK CLEARING The interesting part about this section is the fact that one receives two distinct views of the modern-day Adirondacks. The first is that the residents in and around Long Lake who work and play in harmony with the mountains. They, along with the many part-time residents who maintain camps along Long Lake, take full advantage of all that the area has to offer, economically, recreationally, and aesthetically. The residents make their living from the woods, the tourists, or the state. They decorate their homes and businesses with all of the signs and mementos that indicate their love of the mountains. The other view comes into play when the hiker finally leaves the lake. Here humans are visitors only. Modern-day hikers and backpackers practice Leave No Trace ethics; their love of the mountains is seen in their desire to be inconspicuous to those who follow. It seems that both of these views can coexist in this section of trail.
