Bikepacking the Cococino Loop
Coconino Loop Cues
Stage 1 - Flagstaff to Sedona Overlook
Mileage
0 Start: Intersection of Butler St/Lone Tree Rd, go south on Lone Tree Rd
0.2 At small park on left side of road (just after Sawmill Road), look for singletrack dropping into drainage with Urban Path in it
0.3 Turn left/east on urban Path toward AZ Trail. We are going to be following the AZ Trail carsonites this entire section.
1.2 Pass under the I-40 bridge and go right after the waterway (pond), then turn left up a steep hill following AZT sign
4.9 Continue going to Walnut Canyon (right/south) instead of going left/east up Fisher Point, though both are signed AZT
Continue to follow AZT carsonites
5.8 Turn left on AZT where trail continues straight. Trails parallel each other, but soon the AZT follows switchbacks out of drainage. Trails look close on GPS.
10.4 AZT emerges at Marshal Lake Trailhead. Continue east on dirt road, passing by Marshal Lake (usually dry).
10.8 At road T, continue straight on singletrack, signed AZT.
12.5 Trail follows edge of Anderson Mesa. Nice view of Lake Mary. Brief technical sections.
16.4 AZT merges onto rocky 2-track. Keep following AZT signs, or when there are multiple unsigned roads just choose one, both will rejoin shortly.
20.9 Double track continues straight, singletrack is on right/west side of double track. Look for AZT sign also.
21.9 Cross paved Lake Mary Road, singletrack continues on other side, go under bridge and continue on AZT through a gate and onto a railroad grade road.
29.6 Signed junction with Mormon Mountain Trail and a trail that drops to Dairy Springs Campground. Stay straight on AZT.
31.0 Exit singletrack to major dirt road (it's FR240), turn right/west. Follow signs to Munds Park for next couple intersections.
Turning left on FR240 leads shortly to Mormon Lake Road. Turning right on Mormon Lake Road leads to Knights of Columbus Camp and eventually (2.5 miles) to Mormon Lake Lodge
37.4 Continue pedaling along edge of Casner Park.
39.4 Before arriving at munds park and near several car camping areas, make a left turn onto an obscure double track (signed FR9492D in a tree). If you need food or water, continue straight into Munds
44.7 Turn right at T onto FR226
47.6 Go under highway (I-40), go about 100 yards and follow Schnebly Hill signs south and then west toward Sedona. To the right, following ADOT signs, leads to a water spigot in the middle of a park, only 0.25 miles off route.
53.3 Breathe deeply. You have made it to the Schnebly Vista Point, a dirt pullout/viewpoint. Don't go any further downhill, rather turn around and find the signed Hot Loop double track just 100 yards
east of the vista point. Climb the Hot Loop for 0.9 miles until the last right turn leading to a camping overlook -- and before you get to the radio towers. A short spur road leads to the rim's edge. This is the stopping point for stage 1.
Coordinates of Stage Stop 1 = 34.87830° N 111.70280° W
54.3 Congrats you have finished stage 1. I only hope you were smart enough to stop at Munds to get a beer.
