After consultation with the ranger at Big Oak Flat Ranger Station, and a surprising rain delay, Karen and I headed out on the Sunrise Trailhead at last. We had some options as to how far and how many days we would go. We passed the Sunrise Lakes and looked around at the seemingly-abandoned Sunrise High Sierra Camp. It was not yet open for the season. We decided not to extend the length, but instead headed onto the Cathedral Lakes trailhead back towards Tuoloumne Meadows. We camped at a spectacular high site with panoramic views at 9900K feet. We woke up in the middle of the night to look at the stars. Wow! Saw the Milky Way for the first time. Next day we hiked 6.5 miles back to Tuoloumne Meadows, and took the Yosemite shuttle back to the car at Sunrise Trailhead. This was Karen's first time at elevation, and she had zero issues. This means multiple day High Sierra backpacking trips are in our future!
