This one of the 'must do' hikes when you go to Many Glacier. The easier strategy is to take the boat from Many Glacier Hotel to the end of Lake Josephine and then make the 3.8 mile hike up past Grinnel Lake to the Grinnel Glacier. That in itself is a challenging hike, but you can also start from the Grinnel Glacier trail head and hike along the lakes making it a 10 mile round trip. The hike along Lake is flat and easy with nice views of Lake Josephine as you travel. Once you start climbing, you'll have fantastic views of Grinnel Lake as you climb around the canyon above it to reach the Grinnel Glacier. Upper Grinnel Lake is being formed as the Grinnel Glacier melts. It is amazing to see this with large chunks of ice from the glacier floating in it. This is an unmatched spectacle. You may run across wild life along the way. We saw Big Horn Sheep and near the glacier and a black bear down by the lake. Carry your bear spray!
