In my quest to train for the Saltanay Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru, I used the Mount Tabor Stair hike to prepare me. The steps can be a bit narrow, steep and slightly uneven. Perfect training for Machu Picchu!! Mount Tabor is a domant volcano located in SE Portland. There are very few major cities that have extinct volcanoes within their city limits. This 196-acre city park has trails that crisscross throughout. Dogs are allowed on leash, but there is also an off leash area for them. Restrooms and drinking fountains are at the summit. I would put on my hiking boots and daypack I would be using in Peru. I did this 4 mile loop 3-4x a week. Every time I encountered a set of stairs, I would go up and down them 3x- no matter how many in the set. The biggest set of stairs has 282 steps. No matter how in shape you are, this is a lung buster/quad burner/ass kicker. It makes for an amazing workout!!
