WEST CANADA LAKES TO WAKELY DAM What could be better for a hiker than to be in the heart of the Adirondack wilderness? Such is the case with the start of this section. West Canada Lakes is about as wild as it gets in the entire Adirondack Park. Beyond the site of the former ranger headquarters at big West Lake, the forest is rapidly reclaiming the land and erasing signs of human presence. At Wakely Dam, at the end of this section, that feeling is merely a memory. Here the hiker will likely encounter people pursuing motorized recreation. Fortunately, the trail cushions this shock by making the transition from wilderness footpath to faint tote roads, then to old single-lane dirt roads, and finally to the well-groomed sand of Moose River Plans Rd. (also known as Limekiln Lake-Cedar River Rd.).
