Hike begins at Eaton Saddle. Hike on the Mt. Lowe Road, through the Mueller Tunnel. Shortly after the tunnel you will cross an intersection of single track trails. The one to the right heads up toward San Gabriel Peak and Mt. Disappointment, the one on the left goes to Mt. Markham and Mt. Lowe. For this hike, continue down the road in the center. The road will be a steady downhill, for some time it will continue straight, then make an abrupt turn and switch back and forth until you reach an intersection of the Sam Merrill Trail, the Idlewild Trail, and the road that continues to Inspiration Point. Follow the sign to Inspiration Point, it is a short distance up from the intersection.I personally prefer loops to there-and-back hikes, so instead of heading back the way I came, I chose to head up to Mt. Lowe before going back to my car at Eaton Saddle. There are two trails to choose from if you take this route, the west and the east route. For this hike I chose the East trail. It goes into the woods and shade and switches back and forth for a steady climb. There appears to be an alternate route to the east of the trail, a much steeper and more treacherous trail. Don't risk it, if you slip and fall while on that section of trail, it's a long way to the bottom. After taking the East trail around the East side of the mountain, there will be a trail branching off up to the left. From here it is a short hike to the summit. After that, head back down the trail, and at the intersection, take the trail going to the left instead of heading the way you came up. Hike down to the road, you will recognize the intersection you passed earlier on your way up.From there, continue back down the road the same way you came up, through the tunnel and back to the parking area.
