overnight trip into the absaroka-beartooth wilderness. first day was demoralizing, found the wrong trailhead at first and then were assaulted by bugs. thunderstorm and hail struck just as we found a campsite (which was very challenging in the steep canyon). family was demoralized and decided to turn around the next day. I continued on alone to get as far down the trail as possible. weather was questionable throughout, stopped a few times to consider conditions. ended up making it over the pass, ran back in significant fear as storms went past on both sides of me. very exhausted by the time I got back to the campsite to pick up my large pack. have never felt as much like I might not make it back during the last few miles. a couple girls were lost and asked me for directions about 2 miles from the trailhead, providing the motivation needed to return successfully. was ridiculously tired and could barely move afterwards. nonetheless, one of the most beautiful hikes I have been on
